Insights from a FAANG PM

Found a good role? DON’T apply to that job!
Want to know how to land a job at Netflix, Meta, Apple, Amazon, or Google without applying online? Applying for jobs, especially in our current job market can feel overwhelming. Moreover, the hyper-competitive tech industry can often feel like a labyrinth of challenges to navigate. Where do you start? How do you stand out? And how do you avoid the dreaded “black hole” of online applications?
As someone who’s failed over 60+ interviews (yes, you read that right), I’ve learned a thing or two about the job search process. Here’s my detailed step-by-step guide to getting started, emphasizing the importance of leveraging your network and using failures as stepping stones to success.
Start with Your Network, Not Online Applications
One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is relying solely on online applications. FAANG companies like Netflix, Meta, Google, and Apple, and Amazon, use automated systems to auto-reject candidates based on the specific criteria of the job description. That means, if your resume does not meet ALL of the specified requirements listed in the role, your resume does not even have a shot in reaching a recruiter’s inbox!
Understanding this automated process is crucial as it allows candidates like you to tailor your applications strategically, enhancing their chances of getting noticed. Imagine spending hours crafting your resume only for it to be dismissed by a computer algorithm. Therefore, it’s imperative to focus your efforts where they are most likely to yield results.
Slide into those DM’s
So what are we supposed to do?! Start by leveraging friends, family, neighbors, acquaintances, former colleagues, and most importantly, combing through your network. REFERRALS are the easiest way in to that company. Networking is not just about asking for a job; it’s about building relationships that can open doors.
Still don’t have a plug into that company? Don’t worry, there’s still hope!
Social platforms like LinkedIn can be invaluable tools to get your foot in the door. Sending a DM to a current employee can yield surprising results, especially if you can find some common ground, such as being a college alumni, having worked for the same company, or even just sharing a geographical location/. This personal touch can significantly increase the likelihood of a positive response.
Believe it or not, you could also leverage more controversial “professional” community apps like Blind to submit a post anonymously requesting users from that company for a referral! Most FAANG companies (with the exception of Netflix) provide a referral bonus to their employees if their referral goes through the interview process and accepts the job. This incentive can motivate anonymous users to assist you. Networking extends beyond just immediate acquaintances; it’s about utilizing every possible avenue to connect with potential advocates in your desired field.
Did you know that up to 80% of jobs are filled through networking? Applying online might feel like the easiest route, but your resume is far more likely to get noticed if it comes with a referral.
Why Referrals Matter:
- Your Resume Gets Prioritized: Referred candidates are often fast-tracked through the hiring process.
- Insider Insights: A referral can give you valuable information (including all the juicy secrets) about the role, team, and interview process.
- Higher Success Rate: Studies show that referred candidates are significantly more likely to get hired.
Final Thoughts
Getting started with your job search can feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be such an insurmountable challenge. By leveraging your network effectively, being persistent, and learning to embrace failure as part of the process, you’ll build the skills and confidence you need to land your dream job.
Remember, every interview—whether it ends in an offer or a rejection—is a step forward. So, start applying, start practicing, and don’t be afraid to fail. Your next big opportunity could be just around the corner.
Good luck!
